Excerpt from Irresistible
Resume
Preface
Most of you
reading this book get it. You know that a job search is a sales and marketing project. You know that as a
self-directed job seeker you are like a start up business with a product to market and sell. You are willing to
assume full responsibility for success or failure. You will see to it that you do what you can to get interviews
with potential employers. You will also see the need to oversee the
creation of a first-rate resume, one that markets you effectively. You
will decide whether to write the resume yourself or have someone write it for you. Many things may influence
that decision. But you know you have the tools, physically, mentally and technically, to write the resume you
want and need.
Like with many start up enterprises, your
money might be limited. You cannot afford to hire a first-rate resume writer. But even with limited
resources, you are not going to compromise on your resume and end up considering positions below your
potential.
Maybe money isn't the issue. You simply
wouldn't dream of letting anyone else write your resume. You feel that you know yourself better than anyone and
you know that no one else could share your passion for your career. All you need is some instruction and
guidance to get on track in order to write the best resume you can.
This book is dedicated to the idea that you
can create the right resume for you. Writing a hard-hitting, attention-grabbing resume should not be mysterious.
Hidden among all the resume creation contraptions, shortcuts and wrong-headed advice, there is an effective,
time-tested formula. And you can use this formula to plan, create and manage your resume.
By breaking down the resume creation
process into distinct components, you will see how easy it is to create the hard-hitting, attention-grabbing
resume that will get you more interviews and better job offers.
Warning! This book may not be for
everybody. This book is not designed to be a reference book on resume writing. It is meant to be a how-to
book, designed to be gone through linearly, front to back, beginning to end. It is more like a black-box device;
you go in with a desire for a first-rate resume and come out the other end with the skills to create that
resume.
Reluctantly, I will concede that in extreme
circumstances, you can fast start by skipping to chapter 7. By extreme circumstances, I mean you absolutely,
without exception, must have your resume completed and submitted first thing tomorrow morning. But I absolutely
contend that chapters 1-6 are foundational if you want the best resume possible. An understanding why you write
your resume a certain way, and how your resume is used in a job search, will help you create a better
resume. If you use fast start, be sure and go back and read chapters 1-6. It will help you,
guaranteed.
